50 Cent, born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, in Queens, New York, is a multi-talented artist who has made his mark as a rapper, actor, entrepreneur, and producer. Raised in the South Jamaica neighborhood, Jackson had a challenging childhood after his mother, Sabrina, died when he was just eight years old. Subsequently, he was raised by his grandparents and quickly became acquainted with the hardships of street life, becoming involved in the drug trade during his teenage years. Despite these challenges, Jackson turned his focus toward music, using his early life experiences to shape his powerful and gritty lyrics.
As a young teenager, Jackson encountered numerous obstacles, including brushes with the law. After being arrested multiple times, he eventually decided to redirect his energy toward music. Influenced by hip-hop icons such as KRS-One, Rakim, and LL Cool J, Jackson adopted the name “50 Cent,” symbolizing a new identity and a desire to succeed despite the odds. In 1996, he began learning about music production and soon started recording his own tracks, laying the foundation for his future in the music industry.
Jackson’s early recordings caught the attention of Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C., who signed him to his record label. Working with Jam Master Jay provided 50 Cent with valuable insights into songwriting, timing, and the music business. In 1999, he gained attention with his controversial underground single “How to Rob,” a satirical take on the industry that highlighted his unique style and fearless personality. The track caught the attention of big names in hip-hop, setting the stage for his eventual breakthrough.
