Al Weis is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player, best known for his time as a second baseman with the New York Mets. Born on September 2, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, Weis became a key contributor to one of the most memorable teams in baseball history—the 1969 World Series-winning New York Mets.
Weis attended the University of Michigan, where he played college baseball before being drafted by the New York Mets in 1963. He made his MLB debut with the Mets in 1968, initially playing in a backup role. Weis was known for his defensive abilities rather than his bat, earning a reputation as a solid fielder with good range at second base.
His career-defining moment came in 1969, when the Mets, often considered the “Miracle Mets,” shocked the baseball world by winning the World Series. Weis played an important role in the team’s success, especially in the World Series itself. In Game 4 of the 1969 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles, Weis delivered one of the most iconic moments in Mets history. He went 2-for-3 with a crucial double and scored two runs in the Mets’ 5-0 victory that clinched the championship, securing the Mets’ first-ever World Series title. Weis’s defensive prowess and timely hitting made him an unsung hero during the team’s postseason run.
