Alex Hirsch, born Alexander Robert Hirsch on June 18, 1985, in Piedmont, California, is an American animator, writer, producer, and voice actor celebrated for his innovative storytelling, humor, and distinctive animation style. Best known as the creator of Gravity Falls, one of the most beloved animated series of the 2010s, Hirsch has earned a dedicated fanbase for his creativity, storytelling prowess, and dedication to crafting a unique experience for audiences of all ages. His work, often described as a mix of mystery, supernatural themes, and comedy, has influenced a new wave of animation and continues to captivate viewers around the world.
Hirsch grew up in California, where he and his twin sister, Ariel, were raised by their parents, who encouraged creativity and curiosity. As a child, Hirsch was fascinated by the worlds of animation, comic books, and storytelling, interests that would later shape his career. He was especially influenced by shows like The Simpsons, The X-Files, and Twin Peaks, and these eclectic sources inspired him to blend elements of humor, mystery, and suspense in his work. Hirsch’s experiences growing up in a quirky small town with his sister Ariel would later serve as the foundation for the sibling dynamic and setting in Gravity Falls.
In pursuit of a career in animation, Hirsch attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), known for its prestigious character animation program. While at CalArts, he developed his skills and created Off the Wall, a short animated film that helped him gain recognition. He graduated in 2007, and shortly afterward, he was hired to work on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, a surreal animated series on Cartoon Network. His time on Flapjack allowed him to collaborate with other emerging talents in the industry, like Pendleton Ward and J.G. Quintel, who would go on to create Adventure Time and Regular Show, respectively. Working alongside these innovators encouraged Hirsch to develop his own style and storytelling approach, particularly his knack for combining humor with darker, supernatural elements.
