Born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981, in New York City, Keys grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Raised by her mother, Teresa, a paralegal and part-time actress, Keys developed an early interest in music and the arts. Her mother, who was of Italian and African-American descent, played a significant role in fostering Keys’ creative talents. From a young age, Alicia demonstrated an exceptional musical ability, particularly on the piano, which she began learning at the age of seven. Her natural talent, combined with a love for music, led her to attend the Professional Performing Arts School in New York, where she honed her skills.
By the time she was a teenager, Keys was already showing promise as a musician. At the age of 15, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records, though she was later dropped.
