Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio on March 10, 1994, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, has become one of the most prominent voices in reggaetón and Latin trap music. Known for his dynamic blend of urban genres, unique style, and unapologetic approach to identity and self-expression, Bad Bunny has risen from humble beginnings to global superstardom. He has consistently broken barriers for Latin music in the mainstream, redefining the genre’s reach and challenging cultural norms in the music industry.
Growing up in a modest family in Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny was raised by his father, who was a truck driver, and his mother, who taught English. He showed a love for music at an early age, influenced by reggaetón pioneers like Daddy Yankee and Vico C, as well as genres ranging from salsa and bachata to American rock. Bad Bunny also sang in his church choir as a child, an experience that he credits with sparking his passion for performing.
Martínez’s unique music taste would later become apparent in his genre-blending work. After high school, he attended the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, where he studied audiovisual communication. Although he worked as a bagger in a supermarket, he used his free time to create music, recording songs in his bedroom and releasing them on SoundCloud under the moniker “Bad Bunny.” His stage name originated from a childhood photo of him wearing bunny ears and looking unhappy, a look that would later become a significant part of his brand.
