The Baltimore Orioles are a professional Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The franchise was established in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter clubs, originally known as the Milwaukee Brewers. After a brief stint in Milwaukee, the team moved to St. Louis in 1902, where they became the St. Louis Browns. In 1954, the franchise relocated to Baltimore and adopted the Orioles name, a nod to Maryland’s state bird, symbolizing regional pride and a rich baseball heritage.
The Orioles rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming one of baseball’s most successful franchises. They were especially known for “The Oriole Way,” a baseball philosophy emphasizing fundamentals, scouting, and development that became an organizational standard. Under this system, the team produced many standout players, including Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, and Jim Palmer. The Orioles captured three World Series titles, in 1966, 1970, and 1983, solidifying their status as one of the dominant teams of their time.
The team’s home games are held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, one of the first “retro” ballparks designed to evoke classic stadiums while incorporating modern amenities. Opened in 1992, Camden Yards is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful stadiums in baseball, setting a new trend in ballpark design. The Orioles’ fans are known for their loyalty and passion, supporting the team through various highs and lows, including playoff droughts and rebuilding phases.
