Ben Carson is a prominent American neurosurgeon, author, and political figure known for his groundbreaking medical career and his brief tenure as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Born on September 18, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, Carson grew up in a low-income neighborhood, raised by his mother, Sonya Carson, after his parents divorced when he was eight. Despite facing significant challenges, including poverty and a turbulent family environment, Carson’s mother emphasized the importance of education and hard work, which became fundamental principles in his life.
Carson struggled academically in his early years, often facing difficulties due to his environment and circumstances. However, with his mother’s encouragement, he began to excel in school, developing a strong interest in science and medicine. He attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit, where he excelled in his studies and participated in various extracurricular activities. Carson’s academic performance improved significantly, leading him to enroll at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1973.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Carson attended the University of Michigan Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in 1977. Following medical school, he completed his residency in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. During this time, he developed a passion for pediatric neurosurgery, specializing in the treatment of brain tumors and other neurological conditions in children.
