Bess Armstrong, born Elizabeth Key Armstrong on December 11, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, is an American actress best known for her roles in popular films like The Four Seasons (1981) and Jaws 3-D (1983), as well as in the critically acclaimed television series My So-Called Life (1994–1995). Armstrong’s career spans several decades, during which she has appeared in a variety of film, television, and stage roles. Known for her charm, warmth, and versatility, she has managed to captivate audiences with her portrayals of relatable, strong-willed characters. Armstrong’s enduring appeal stems from her naturalistic acting style and her ability to bring authenticity to each role she undertakes.
Elizabeth Key Armstrong was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother, Louise Armstrong, was a teacher at Bryn Mawr School, and her father, Alexander Armstrong, was an English teacher at Gilman School, as well as a local radio and television personality. Raised in an academic environment that valued the arts and literature, Armstrong was exposed to the world of performance and storytelling from a young age. She developed an interest in acting during her high school years and pursued it further when she attended Brown University.
At Brown, Armstrong studied Latin and theater, honing her skills and immersing herself in the university’s rich cultural scene. She performed in multiple campus productions and was a member of several theater groups, which helped her develop confidence and versatility on stage. Her formal training and exposure to diverse theatrical styles prepared her for a career in acting, and after graduation, she decided to pursue acting professionally.
