From 1949 until 1964, Bobby Shantz was a Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher for the United States. Shantz received several honors and recognitions throughout his stellar career for his outstanding pitching abilities, adaptability, and fierce competitiveness.

Pottstown, Pennsylvania was Bobby Shantz’s birthplace and childhood home. He was a star pitcher in high school and had a lifelong love for the sport of baseball. In 1948, after finishing high school in Pottstown, Shantz began his professional baseball career in the minor levels after signing with the Philadelphia Athletics.

In 1949, Bobby Shantz debuted as a left-handed pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics in Major League Baseball. He became one of the league’s most exciting young players very fast. His command of the ball, finesse in delivering his pitches, and knack for inducing ground balls brought Shantz great renown as a pitcher.

From 1951 to 1955, he was a dominant pitcher, earning five straight All-Star selections from the American League. Throughout his Major League Baseball career, Bobby Shantz was a member of many different clubs, including the Athletics of Kansas City, the Yankees of New York, the Pirates of Pittsburgh, the Colt.45s of Houston, the Cardinals of St. Louis, the Cubs of Chicago, and the Phillies of Philadelphia.
