The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey club from Boston, Massachusetts, representing the Eastern Conference in the NHL. Six times (1929, 1939, 1941, 1970, 1972, and 2011), the Bruins have been crowned Stanley Cup champions. The Bruins entered the National Hockey League as its first American franchise in 1924.

The Bruins’ first taste of championship success came in 1929 when they defeated the New York Rangers in the first Stanley Cup final to include two American clubs. Eddie Shore, Aubrey “Dit” Clapper, and Cecil “Tiny” Thompson, who would become legends in their own right, played on the first Bruins squads.

After the 1938–1939 and 1940–1941 seasons, the Bruins won another two Stanley Cups thanks to the stellar play of goaltender Frank Brimsek. Between 1943 and 1958, they made five additional trips to the Stanley Cup finals but came up short each time.

The Bruins had a terrible 1960s, finishing dead last in the NHL in six of the seven seasons from 1960–61 to 1966–67, but the emergence of superstars like Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito helped turn things around. In 1970, under their direction, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 29 years.

Defenseman Bobby Orr led the Bruins to another Stanley Cup victory in 1972 and was named MVP three times (1970–1972) before leaving the club following the 1975–1976 season. After joining the Bruins in 1979, future Hall of Fame defender Ray Bourque became the new face of the organization and remained with them for almost two decades.
