The Boston Red Sox, one of the oldest and most storied franchises in Major League Baseball (MLB), were established in 1901 as a charter member of the American League. The team originally played under the name the Boston Americans and was known for its early success, including a championship win in the inaugural 1903 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Red Sox quickly became a cornerstone of Boston sports culture, with their fan base growing rapidly due to their competitive spirit and the exciting play on the field.
The team’s home games were initially held at the Huntington Avenue Grounds before moving to Fenway Park in 1912, a venue that remains synonymous with the Red Sox today. Fenway Park is renowned for its iconic features, such as the Green Monster, a high left-field wall that has become a symbol of the ballpark and the team.
The Red Sox experienced considerable success in the early 20th century, winning championships in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. The team’s roster included legendary players such as Cy Young, Tris Speaker, and, most famously, Babe Ruth. Ruth joined the Red Sox in 1914 and quickly became a star, showcasing his remarkable hitting prowess as a pitcher and an outfielder.
However, following the 1918 season, the Red Sox made a controversial decision to sell Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, a move that would haunt the franchise for decades. This transaction is often cited as the beginning of the “Curse of the Bambino,” as the team would not win another World Series title for 86 years, leading to a perception of a perpetual struggle and heartache among fans.
