Chappell Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, is a rising American singer-songwriter known for her bold, theatrical pop sound, passionate lyrics, and unabashed celebration of LGBTQ+ culture. Roan’s journey to becoming a pop artist has been unconventional and marked by perseverance, self-discovery, and reinvention.

Roan’s early musical influences included church hymns and pop music, which she encountered through her family’s church and radio. At 12, she began writing her songs, inspired by artists like Stevie Nicks, Adele, and Lana Del Rey, blending raw emotion with intricate storytelling. In high school, Roan gained local recognition and posted music online, eventually catching the attention of Atlantic Records, who signed her in her teens.

Her first major project was her 2017 EP School Nights, which was influenced by dark pop sounds and emotionally charged lyrics. The EP showcased her powerful voice and introspective lyricism, but despite critical praise, Roan struggled to break into mainstream success. Feeling constrained by the industry’s expectations, she left Atlantic Records to pursue a more authentic sound and artistic direction.

As an independent artist, Roan transformed, adopting her new stage name, Chappell Roan, and leaning into a more vibrant, theatrical style. Relocating to Los Angeles, she immersed herself in the city’s queer nightlife, which deeply influenced her music, performance style, and personal life. Her singles Pink Pony Club (2020) and California (2021) marked a new chapter, embracing themes of identity, freedom, and self-acceptance. Pink Pony Club, in particular, became a fan favorite for its heartfelt lyrics about escaping societal expectations and finding a sense of belonging within the LGBTQ+ community.
