Charlie Maher is an accomplished Australian long-distance runner and advocate for Indigenous health and well-being. He is widely recognized as the first Indigenous Australian to complete the New York City Marathon, a feat he achieved in 2010. A member of the Arrernte people, Maher was born and raised in Alice Springs, a remote town in the Northern Territory. His upbringing in the heart of Australia deeply shaped his identity and commitment to supporting Indigenous communities.
Maher’s journey into marathon running began as part of the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP), an initiative founded by Australian running legend Robert de Castella. The program seeks to inspire and empower Indigenous Australians through long-distance running. Maher was part of the inaugural group of runners selected for the program, despite having little running experience before joining. Through rigorous training and determination, he quickly became a skilled athlete capable of competing on the world stage.
