Charlie Sheen, born Carlos Irwin Estévez on September 3, 1965, in New York City, is an American actor known for his roles in television and film as well as his high-profile, turbulent personal life. The youngest son of actor Martin Sheen and artist Janet Templeton, Sheen grew up in a family already immersed in the entertainment industry. His brothers, Emilio and Ramon, and sister Renée also pursued acting careers. From an early age, Sheen showed an interest in acting, joining his father on film sets and even making a cameo in The Execution of Private Slovik (1974) at the age of nine.
Raised in Malibu, California, Sheen attended Santa Monica High School, where he developed a reputation as both a talented baseball player and a budding actor. While he showed academic promise, Sheen was expelled from high school due to poor grades and attendance just days before graduation. Rather than completing his education, he chose to dive into acting, making his professional debut under the stage name Charlie Sheen. His decision was largely influenced by his father, Martin Sheen, who adopted a stage name early in his career. Charlie opted to follow this tradition to ease his path in Hollywood.
Sheen’s career began to take off in the 1980s, with his first significant role in the 1984 Cold War thriller Red Dawn, where he starred alongside Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, and Lea Thompson. His career gained momentum with The Boys Next Door (1985) and Lucas (1986). However, his big break came in 1986 when he starred in Oliver Stone’s Platoon, a harrowing war drama that won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Sheen’s portrayal of Chris Taylor, a young soldier caught in the horrors of the Vietnam War, earned him widespread acclaim and positioned him as a rising star in Hollywood.
