Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California, is an iconic American singer, actress, and television personality, widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile entertainers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her career, which spans over six decades, has seen her excel in multiple fields, from music and film to television and business. Often referred to as the “Goddess of Pop,” Cher has redefined herself multiple times throughout her career, earning acclaim and adoration from fans worldwide.

Cher was born to a struggling family; her father, John Sarkisian, was an Armenian-American truck driver, and her mother, Georgia Holt, was a model and aspiring actress. After her parents’ divorce, Cher and her mother moved to Los Angeles, where Cher’s early years were marked by financial instability. She attended Montclair College Preparatory School, but her passion for performing arts led her to drop out in the 11th grade to pursue a music career.

At the age of 16, Cher moved to Los Angeles and soon began to pursue an entertainment career. In 1964, she met producer Sonny Bono, who would become both her professional partner and husband. The two collaborated musically, with Cher initially serving as a backup vocalist. In 1965, Sonny and Cher’s breakthrough came with the hit single “I Got You Babe,” which reached number one on the charts, marking the beginning of a long and successful career as a duo. They became one of the most popular acts of the 1960s, known for their catchy tunes, Cher’s distinctive contralto voice, and their on-stage chemistry.

While the duo’s success continued through the late 1960s and early 1970s, Cher’s solo career began to take shape in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her 1966 hit “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” showcased her unique voice and ability to deliver powerful performances, and she soon became known for her ability to blend genres, from pop and rock to folk and disco.
