Christopher Alvin Stapleton, known professionally as Chris Stapleton, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who has profoundly influenced modern country music and is celebrated for his rich, soulful voice and versatility across genres. Born on April 15, 1978, in Lexington, Kentucky, and raised in the small town of Staffordsville, Stapleton grew up with a love for country music but was also influenced by rock, blues, and soul. His distinctive style, which blends these influences, has resonated with audiences across traditional genre lines, propelling him to the forefront of country and Americana music.
Stapleton moved to Nashville in 2001 to pursue a music career, initially as a songwriter. Before gaining fame as a performer, he was one of Nashville’s most sought-after songwriters, writing or co-writing over 170 songs, many of which became hits for top artists. His songwriting credits include songs for George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, and Adele. Known for his lyrical depth, Stapleton has the rare ability to convey vulnerability and raw emotion in his songs, which often tackle themes of love, heartache, and personal reflection.
In 2015, Stapleton released his breakthrough solo album, Traveller. Blending country, blues, Southern rock, and soul, the album showcased Stapleton’s powerful voice and masterful guitar work. Traveler became an instant success, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and later winning several major awards, including Album of the Year at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards and a Grammy for Best Country Album. His performance of “Tennessee Whiskey” and “Drink You Away” with Justin Timberlake at the 2015 CMA Awards earned widespread acclaim and introduced Stapleton to a mainstream audience, solidifying his status as a new face of country music.
Stapleton’s follow-up albums, From A Room: Volume 1 and From A Room: Volume 2, both released in 2017, continued his critical and commercial success. Both albums drew inspiration from classic country sounds, bluesy riffs, and heartfelt lyrics, leading to more Grammy wins and strengthening his place in the music world. His fourth studio album, Starting Over, released in 2020, earned further acclaim and featured introspective songs that explored personal and social themes, further showcasing Stapleton’s growth as a songwriter and artist.
