Clyde Kusatsu is an American actor, director, and producer, known for his extensive work in television, film, and voice acting, particularly as a trailblazer for Asian-American representation in Hollywood. Born on September 13, 1948, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kusatsu’s career spans over five decades, during which he has made a significant impact in both mainstream and independent entertainment. His diverse body of work, which includes both acting and behind-the-scenes contributions, has solidified his reputation as a respected figure in the industry.
Kusatsu’s career in entertainment began in the late 1960s when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. He attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in theater, and soon began to establish himself in the world of acting. His early years in Hollywood were marked by the challenges faced by many Asian-American actors, as roles for minorities in mainstream entertainment were limited and often stereotypical. Despite these obstacles, Kusatsu persevered, determined to carve out a successful career.
His breakout role came in the 1970s when he was cast in recurring roles on several popular television series. He appeared in the series “Kung Fu” (1972–1975), a groundbreaking show for its portrayal of Asian-American culture, where Kusatsu played various characters in a time when Asian-American actors were rarely featured in leading roles. He also appeared in the classic television series “MAS*H” in the 1970s, making notable guest appearances as a hospital worker. These roles helped Kusatsu gain recognition and proved his acting versatility.
