Dana Perino, born Dana Marie Perino on May 9, 1972, in Evanston, Wyoming, is an American political commentator, television personality, and author. She is best known for her role as the White House Press Secretary during the George W. Bush administration, where she made history as the second woman to hold this position. In addition to her political career, Perino is a prominent figure in media, serving as a co-host of the popular Fox News talk show The Five and hosting The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino. Her career in both politics and media has made her a well-respected figure in American public life.
Perino grew up in Wyoming, where she attended Pinedale High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Southern Colorado, now known as Colorado State University-Pueblo. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications and worked as a reporter and anchor for a local news station in Denver. Perino then moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue a career in politics, earning a master’s degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
Perino’s professional journey in Washington began in the early 2000s when she served as an intern for the White House. She quickly rose through the ranks of political communication, working as a staff assistant in the Department of Justice and later as the spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice. In 2005, Perino joined the George W. Bush administration as the Deputy Press Secretary. During her time in the administration, she gained a reputation for being a poised and effective communicator. In 2007, following the resignation of Tony Snow, President George W. Bush appointed Perino as the White House Press Secretary, making her the first Republican woman to hold the role.
