David Muir is an American journalist and television anchor best known for his work as the anchor and managing editor of ABC World News Tonight with David Muir. Born on November 8, 1973, in Syracuse, New York, Muir has established himself as one of the most respected and trusted figures in broadcast journalism. His commitment to delivering the news with clarity, empathy, and accuracy has earned him widespread acclaim, while his work on some of the world’s most significant events has showcased his dedication to informing the public.
David Muir was raised in Onondaga Hill, a suburb of Syracuse, where he grew up with his older sister, Rebecca, and two younger step-siblings. From a young age, Muir showed a keen interest in current events and journalism. According to his family, he was fascinated by the news and would often narrate “reports” to them as a child. By age 12, he wrote a letter to a Syracuse news anchor asking for advice on pursuing a career in journalism. This passion for the field drove him to seek out early opportunities to learn about broadcasting.
Muir attended Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School, graduating in 1991, before enrolling at Ithaca College’s Park School of Communications, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1995. While at Ithaca, Muir spent a semester at the Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University and another at the University of Salamanca in Spain. These experiences broadened his perspective, giving him a global outlook on news and politics. Muir’s fluency in Spanish has since allowed him to reach broader audiences and report on stories with cultural sensitivity.
