The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team based in Denver, Colorado. They are a member of the National Football League (NFL) and compete in the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. Established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), the Broncos have since become one of the most recognized and successful franchises in professional sports.
The Broncos were founded by Bob Howsam in 1960. Originally part of the AFL, the team faced many challenges in its formative years, including struggles on the field and financial difficulties. However, the franchise gained a loyal following despite its early setbacks. The team’s first significant success came in the late 1960s when they reached the AFL playoffs in 1969, although they did not win the championship.
With the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Broncos became a part of the NFL. The early 1970s were marked by changes in management and personnel, including the hiring of coach John Ralston, who led the team to its first division title in 1973. The Broncos faced challenges in the postseason, but they continued to build a competitive roster, laying the foundation for future success.
The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the emergence of the “Orange Crush” defense, a nickname for the team’s formidable defensive unit. Under head coach Red Miller, the Broncos reached Super Bowl XII in 1978 but lost to the Dallas Cowboys. However, the team gained national recognition and began to establish its identity as a competitive force in the NFL.
