Dick Smothers, born Richard Remick Smothers on November 20, 1939, in New York City, is an American comedian, actor, and musician best known as one-half of the iconic comedy duo, the Smothers Brothers. Alongside his brother, Tom Smothers, Dick became a household name through their groundbreaking television show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which aired on CBS from 1967 to 1969.
Dick Smothers was born to a musical family. His father, a prominent musician, influenced both Dick and his younger brother Tom, who shared a passion for music and comedy from an early age. The Smothers brothers grew up in a family that valued the arts, and their mother was also musically inclined, which gave the brothers a deep appreciation for music. They both began playing instruments at a young age, with Dick focusing on the guitar.
After attending Redondo Union High School in California, Dick went on to study at the University of Washington, where he played football and majored in economics. However, his true passion for music and entertainment ultimately led him to a career in comedy and performance.
In the early 1960s, Dick and Tom Smothers formed their comedic act, initially centered around their musical talents. They began performing in nightclubs, honing their comedic timing and musical skills. The duo played folk music and harmonized together while also incorporating humor into their performances. Their act was built on the contrast between Tom’s straight-man persona and Dick’s more playful and often bumbling character.
