Aubrey Drake Graham, known professionally as Drake, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor who has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary music. Born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Ontario, Drake’s journey from a child star on a Canadian teen drama to an international music icon is a testament to his talent, versatility, and relentless drive.
Drake was born to Dennis Graham, a drummer who worked with Jerry Lee Lewis, and Sandi Graham, an educator. His mixed heritage—his father is African American and his mother is Jewish Canadian—provided a rich cultural backdrop that would later influence his music. Raised in the Forest Hill neighborhood of Toronto, Drake attended a Jewish day school before transferring to a public high school. He was introduced to music at a young age and often expressed an interest in performing.
Drake’s early exposure to the entertainment industry came through acting. At the age of 15, he landed the role of Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star who becomes wheelchair-bound after a school shooting, in the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. The show ran from 2001 to 2009, allowing Drake to hone his acting skills and gain recognition in the entertainment world.
While working on Degrassi, Drake began to pursue his passion for music. In 2006, he released his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement, showcasing his lyrical ability and unique sound. He followed this with two more mixtapes, Comeback Season (2007) and So Far Gone (2009), which gained him a dedicated following and critical acclaim. The single “Best I Ever Had” from So Far Gone became a breakout hit, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and establishing Drake as a rising star in the music industry.
