Dwayne Douglas Johnson, known widely as “The Rock,” was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, to a family with a strong wrestling heritage. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a pioneering professional wrestler, while his maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, was also a respected figure in the sport. This legacy deeply influenced Johnson, who eventually found international fame as both a wrestler and a Hollywood star.
Johnson spent part of his youth in New Zealand, where he learned about his Samoan heritage, and then moved to the U.S., living in multiple states. In high school, he developed an interest in sports, excelling in football, eventually leading him to the University of Miami on a full scholarship. He won a national championship with the Hurricanes in 1991 as a defensive lineman. Though injuries curtailed his NFL dreams, he briefly played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League before transitioning to wrestling.
Following his football career, Johnson joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1996, initially performing under Rocky Maivia. His natural charisma and physical prowess helped him stand out, and he soon adopted the persona “The Rock,” an arrogant, trash-talking character that became iconic. Johnson became one of the most successful wrestlers ever, holding multiple WWE championships and building a massive fan base. Known for his electrifying catchphrases and energy, The Rock played a significant role in the “Attitude Era” that defined WWE in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
