Everton Football Club, commonly referred to as Everton, is a professional football club based in Liverpool, England. Founded in 1878, the club has a rich history and is one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in England. Known for its passionate fan base, iconic Goodison Park stadium, and a long-standing rivalry with Liverpool FC, Everton holds a significant place in English football.
The club was originally founded as St. Domingo FC in 1878 by members of a local church in the Everton area of Liverpool. The team changed its name to Everton in 1879 to reflect its broader community appeal. In 1887, Everton moved to their current home, Goodison Park, which remains one of the most storied football grounds in the country. The club’s colors, royal blue shirts, and white shorts, became instantly recognizable in the world of football.
Everton’s early success came in the late 19th century when the club became one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. By the 1890s, Everton had already established itself as a force in English football, winning their first league title in the 1890-91 season. The club continued to enjoy domestic success through the early 20th century, winning several more league titles and FA Cups. Everton was known for its exciting attacking football, and the team garnered a reputation as one of the premier clubs in the country.
Throughout the 20th century, Everton maintained its place among the top clubs in English football. The club won several league titles, with their most successful periods coming in the 1920s, 1960s, and 1980s. In the 1960s, under the management of Harry Catterick, the club enjoyed a period of dominance, securing two league titles (1962-63 and 1969-70) and an FA Cup win in 1966. This era saw some of the club’s most iconic players, including the likes of Alex Young, the “Golden Vision,” and the prolific striker Dave Hickson.
