Fred Dryer is a former professional football player, actor, and television producer best known for his successful NFL career and his starring role in the 1980s police drama Hunter. Born on July 6, 1946, in Hawthorne, California, Dryer grew up in Southern California and attended Lawndale High School, where he was a standout athlete. He went on to play college football at San Diego State University under legendary coach Don Coryell, becoming a dominant defensive player and helping to elevate the Aztecs’ national reputation in the sport.

In 1969, Dryer was drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft by the New York Giants, beginning a 13-year professional football career that would make him one of the most feared defensive linemen of his era. Standing at 6 feet 6 inches and weighing over 240 pounds, Dryer possessed both power and agility, making him a formidable opponent on the field. He played for the Giants until 1971 and then joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1972, where he would spend the remainder of his career until retiring in 1981. Dryer was particularly known for his speed and pass-rushing ability, attributes that set him apart in the league.

One of the most notable moments in Dryer’s NFL career came in 1973 when he became the first player in NFL history to record two safeties in a single game, a record that remains unmatched. Known for his intensity and relentless drive, Dryer earned the nickname “The Sultan of Safeties” and solidified his reputation as one of the Rams’ defensive leaders. Over his career, he accumulated an impressive number of sacks, although these were unofficial as the NFL didn’t formally record sack statistics until 1982. Dryer was selected to the Pro Bowl and named an All-Pro multiple times, and he retired with a respected legacy as one of the best defensive players of his time.
