A native Chicagoan, Gary Fencik spent his formative years there. While a student at Yale, he played football and studied economics. Throughout his academic and professional careers, Fencik was an exceptional student-athlete.

As a safety for the Yale Bulldogs football team, Fencik stood out. The National Football League scouts who saw him play in college were the ones who ultimately signed him to a professional contract.

The 1976 NFL Draft saw the Miami Dolphins choose Gary Fencik in the tenth round. But after signing with the Chicago Bears that year, his career took off. Fencik spent his whole professional career (from 1976 to 1987) with the Chicago Bears.

Fencik gained renown as a hard-hitting coach and football genius while playing with the Bears. He was an integral part of the Bears’ defense and helped them win games over the years. The Bears’ 1985 season, which ended in Super Bowl XX, was legendary, and Fencik was an integral part of it. His legacy lives on as one of the greatest Bears of all time; he was named to the Pro Bowl thrice.
