Born on November 21, 1945, in Washington, D.C., Goldie Jeanne Hawn was the daughter of Laura, a homemaker, and Edward Hawn, a band musician. She grew up in the suburban neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland, where she was encouraged by her parents to pursue the arts. Hawn attended Montgomery Blair High School, where she took an interest in ballet, and later pursued dance studies at the American University in Washington, D.C. She also studied at the School of American Ballet in New York City.
Hawn’s career began in the world of dance and musical theater, and she made her television debut as a dancer in the 1960s. She first gained widespread attention as a member of the popular sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (1968–1973), where her bubbly, carefree persona and comedic timing quickly made her a fan favorite. Her big break on the show came when she appeared as the iconic character of a ditzy, giggling blonde. Hawn’s infectious energy and radiant smile made her an instant star, and her time on Laugh-In catapulted her into Hollywood.
