Ian Murray McKellen grew up in a loving family, the son of a civil engineer and a homemaker. He developed a passion for acting during his childhood, influenced by his father, who was an amateur actor. After his father’s passing when Ian was just 12 years old, he found solace in the arts. He attended Wrekin College, where he participated in school productions and honed his craft.
McKellen studied at the University of Cambridge, where he was involved in the prestigious Footlights drama club. He graduated in 1961 with a degree in English literature. His time at Cambridge solidified his ambition to pursue acting professionally, leading him to join the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) shortly after graduation.
