Joe Pisarcik, born July 2, 1952, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, is a former NFL and CFL quarterback best remembered for his time with the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. Pisarcik’s football journey, marked by his persistence and resilience, saw him rise from college football at New Mexico State University to a nine-year professional career in two of North America’s top leagues. He is perhaps most famously associated with the “Miracle at the Meadowlands,” a play that forever etched his name in NFL history. After his football career, Pisarcik shifted to a leadership role with the NFL Players Association, advocating for player benefits and welfare.

Raised in the small town of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, Pisarcik showed athletic talent from a young age. He excelled in high school football, earning a scholarship to play quarterback at New Mexico State University. Pisarcik played for the New Mexico State Aggies from 1971 to 1973, where he proved to be a steady and reliable player, known for his strong arm and solid decision-making skills. Despite not being a standout star, he was respected for his leadership qualities, commitment, and work ethic. Though he didn’t attract a great deal of attention from NFL scouts, his college performance was strong enough to land him opportunities in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Unable to secure a spot on an NFL roster after college, Pisarcik joined the CFL in 1974, signing with the Calgary Stampeders. Playing in the CFL offered Pisarcik valuable experience and allowed him to further develop his skills in a competitive league. His time in Canada would prove essential in preparing him for the NFL, as he adapted to the CFL’s faster-paced game and broadened his strategic understanding.
