Upper Darby is a Philadelphia neighborhood where John Cappelletti came into this world on August 9, 1952. He inherited a passion for athletics from his tight-knit Italian-American family. As a standout running back at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, John garnered a lot of attention during his football career.

Penn State, where he would go on to become a college football star, offered him a scholarship because of his stellar high school record. Cappelletti joined the Penn State football program in 1970 and played under the great Joe Paterno. Before he found his niche as a running back, he spent time on defense.

Although Cappelletti had a breakthrough year as a junior in 1972, it was his senior year of 1973 when he firmly established himself as a legend in college football. Cappelletti led the Nittany Lions to a perfect 12-0 season in 1973, which included a win in the Orange Bowl. He ran for 1,522 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. His leadership and tenacity on the field were just as remarkable as his statistical accomplishments.

John Cappelletti was named the 1973 Heisman Trophy winner for his excellent performance on the college football field. The only Penn State player to ever receive the honor, he made history. His acceptance speech is still considered a highlight of the Heisman era. Cappelletti thanked his younger brother Joey, whom he mentioned in his acceptance speech, for the honor.
