The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri, that competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the American League (AL) Central Division. Established in 1969, the Royals have had a rich history, characterized by periods of success, notable players, and passionate fan support.

The Royals were founded in 1969 as an expansion team, along with the San Diego Padres. The team name was inspired by the American Royal, a livestock and horse show held annually in Kansas City. The franchise’s first home games were played at Municipal Stadium, which the team shared with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.

The Royals experienced a challenging start in their inaugural season, finishing with a record of 69-93. However, the team quickly began to improve, thanks to a strong roster that included future stars. In the early years, the Royals gained recognition for their competitive play, earning their first playoff appearance in 1976.

The late 1970s marked a transformative period for the Royals. Under the leadership of manager Whitey Herzog, the team developed into a contender in the American League. Key players during this era included George Brett, a Hall of Famer and one of the franchise’s all-time greats, and pitcher Dennis Leonard. The Royals clinched their first AL West Division title in 1976, advancing to the postseason, where they faced the New York Yankees.
