Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, to Irmelin (née Indenbirken), a legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an underground comix writer, publisher, and distributor of comic books. Raised in a bohemian neighborhood, DiCaprio was exposed to the arts and culture from a young age. His parents divorced when he was just a year old, and he was raised by his mother in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. DiCaprio showed an early interest in acting, often performing in school plays and participating in local theater productions.
Breakthrough in Acting DiCaprio’s acting career began at the age of 14 when he landed a role in the television series “Growing Pains” (1991-1992) as Luke Brower, a homeless boy taken in by the Seaver family. His performance garnered attention, and he soon transitioned to film, receiving critical acclaim for his role in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993), where he played the mentally challenged brother of Johnny Depp’s character. This performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Rise to Stardom DiCaprio’s career skyrocketed with the release of “Romeo + Juliet” (1996), directed by Baz Luhrmann. His portrayal of the tragic romantic hero captivated audiences and established him as a teen heartthrob. However, it was his role in James Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997) that solidified his status as a global superstar. The film became the highest-grossing film of all time at that point, and DiCaprio’s performance as Jack Dawson turned him into a household name. The film won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is still regarded as one of the greatest romantic films in cinema history.
