Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., widely known as Lil Wayne, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record executive, celebrated as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop. Born on September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Wayne grew up in the city’s Hollygrove neighborhood and started rapping at the early age of eight. His path in music took off when he caught the attention of Bryan “Birdman” Williams, the co-founder of Cash Money Records. By age 12, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records, beginning a lifelong relationship with the label and entering a world that would see him grow from a child prodigy into one of rap’s biggest stars.
Lil Wayne first gained significant recognition as part of the group Hot Boys, formed in 1997 with fellow Cash Money artists Juvenile, Turk, and B.G. Their album Guerrilla Warfare (1999) was a hit, solidifying the group’s influence in the Southern rap scene. Shortly after, Wayne launched his solo career with his debut album, Tha Block Is Hot (1999), which went platinum. The album showcased his youthful charisma, strong lyrical style, and hints of his now-signature rapid-fire delivery. His next two albums, Lights Out (2000) and 500 Degreez (2002) solidified his status but only hinted at his future impact.
The release of Tha Carter (2004) marked a turning point in Wayne’s career, showcasing a more mature sound and lyrical depth. This album, followed by Tha Carter II (2005), started to gain mainstream attention, but it was Tha Carter III (2008) that skyrocketed his popularity. With hits like “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” and “Got Money,” Tha Carter III sold over a million copies in its first week, won him his first Grammy for Best Rap Album, and cemented him as one of the most successful rappers of the 2000s.
