Lin-Manuel Miranda, born on January 16, 1980, in New York City, is a renowned American composer, lyricist, actor, and playwright celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to theater. Raised in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, he grew up immersed in a vibrant Puerto Rican community. His love for music and performance emerged early, influenced by his parents, especially his father, a political consultant, and his mother, a psychologist. Before enrolling at Wesleyan University, Miranda attended Hunter College Elementary and High School, where he first showcased his musical talent and writing prowess.
There, he wrote the first draft of In the Heights, a musical inspired by his experiences growing up in a Latino neighborhood in NYC. In the Heights later became Miranda’s first Broadway success, premiering in 2008 to critical acclaim and winning multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The musical’s blend of hip-hop, salsa, and traditional musical theater was unique, heralding Miranda’s innovative style and commitment to telling stories of the Latinx community. His influence expanded significantly with Hamilton, a musical he created after reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton.
Combining rap, R&B, and historical storytelling, Hamilton debuted Off-Broadway in 2015 before quickly transferring to Broadway, where it became a cultural phenomenon. It earned 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, cementing Miranda’s place in musical theater history. In addition to his stage work, Miranda has contributed significantly to film and television. He wrote music for Moana (2016), earning an Academy Award nomination for the song “How Far I’ll Go.” He also appeared in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and directed his first feature film, Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021), based on Jonathan Larson’s musical.
