The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, often referred to simply as the Angels, are a professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California. They are a member of Major League Baseball (MLB) and compete in the American League (AL) West division. Founded in 1961, the Angels have experienced a rich history marked by notable achievements, iconic players, and a passionate fan base.
The Angels were established as an expansion team in 1961, originally as the “Los Angeles Angels.” The team was founded by Gene Autry, the famous singer and actor, who became the first owner. The Angels played their initial seasons at Dodger Stadium before moving to their own ballpark, Anaheim Stadium (now Angel Stadium), in 1966. The franchise’s early years were characterized by struggles to find consistent success, but they began to build a competitive roster.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Angels experienced a mixture of successes and challenges. They made their first playoff appearance in 1979, capturing the AL West title. However, the Angels faced disappointment in the playoffs, losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the AL Championship Series (ALCS). Despite these setbacks, the team continued to attract talented players, including future Hall of Famers like Nolan Ryan and Rod Carew.
