The Los Angeles Kings are a professional ice hockey team based in Los Angeles, California. They compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the NHL (National Hockey League) and are known for their passionate fanbase, two Stanley Cup victories, and their unique identity within the world of hockey. Established in 1967 as part of the NHL’s expansion from the “Original Six” teams, the Kings have carved a distinctive place in hockey history and grown into a prominent sports franchise on the West Coast.
The Kings were one of six expansion teams in the 1967-68 season, a move that aimed to broaden the NHL’s reach beyond its original markets. Owned by Canadian entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke, who also owned the Los Angeles Lakers, the Kings became one of the league’s early West Coast teams, generating excitement for a new sport in Southern California. Their initial roster included star player Eddie “The Jet” Joyal, and they played at The Forum in Inglewood, California, known for its unique purple and gold seats that matched the Kings’ colors at the time. Despite early struggles with performance and building a solid fanbase, the Kings gained traction by the mid-1970s and earned playoff berths with exciting players like Marcel Dionne, who became one of the most prolific scorers in NHL history.
A major turning point for the Kings came in 1988 when they acquired Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers in what became one of the most significant trades in NHL history. Gretzky, already a global superstar, transformed the Kings, both in terms of team success and popularity. His presence elevated hockey’s profile in Los Angeles and across the United States, inspiring a generation of fans and helping the Kings reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. Although they fell to the Montreal Canadiens in five games, the Gretzky era marked a period of heightened success and visibility, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence the organization and NHL growth on the West Coast.
