Lou Adler is a legendary American record producer, talent manager, and film director, whose career has spanned over six decades and made an indelible impact on the entertainment industry. Born on December 13, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Adler’s contributions to music, film, and popular culture have earned him recognition as one of the most influential figures in both the recording industry and Hollywood.
Adler began his career in the music industry during the late 1950s as a manager for various acts. He first gained attention working with Herb Alpert, with whom he co-founded A&M Records in 1962. Though his time with A&M was brief, it was a formative experience that helped Adler hone his skills as a music executive and producer. He went on to establish his label, Dunhill Records, which played a pivotal role in defining the sound of the 1960s and 1970s.
At Dunhill Records, Adler signed and produced for several iconic acts, including The Mamas & the Papas, Johnny Rivers, and Barry McGuire. His work with The Mamas & the Papas remains one of his most significant accomplishments. Adler produced the band’s debut album, “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears” (1966), which included the timeless hits “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday.”
