The New York Mets, a professional baseball team based in New York City, are a member of the National League (NL) East division in Major League Baseball (MLB). Established in 1962, the Mets have a rich and storied history that reflects the ups and downs of baseball in New York, embodying resilience, passion, and an enduring connection with their fans.
The Mets were founded as part of MLB’s expansion efforts in the early 1960s, aimed at filling the void left by the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants to California. The team’s name, “Mets,” is short for “Metropolitans,” a nod to New York City’s rich baseball history. The team’s colors, blue and orange, pay homage to the city’s two former franchises.
In their inaugural season in 1962, the Mets struggled, finishing last in the National League with a record of 40 wins and 120 losses. This dismal performance did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the fanbase, as the team became known for its lovable underdog status. The Mets began to build a loyal following, particularly among fans in Queens and throughout New York City.
The turning point for the Mets came in 1969 when they achieved what is now known as the “Miracle Mets.” Under the leadership of manager Gil Hodges, the team made an improbable run to the World Series. The Mets, who had finished the regular season with a record of 100 wins and 62 losses, faced the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. In a stunning upset, the Mets won the series in five games, capturing their first championship. This victory solidified the Mets’ place in baseball history and endeared them to fans across the country.
