Ozzy Osbourne, born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England, is a legendary rock musician, often dubbed the “Prince of Darkness,” known for his iconic voice, theatrical performances, and as the lead vocalist of the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Raised in a working-class family in the industrial town of Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy faced struggles early on, including severe dyslexia, undiagnosed mental health challenges, and financial hardship.
Music became an escape, and his early admiration for the Beatles inspired him to pursue a career in rock. After brief stints in menial jobs and minor run-ins with the law, Ozzy formed Black Sabbath in 1968 with guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. The group’s music, characterized by dark, heavy riffs and themes of occult and horror, was revolutionary. Their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath (1970), followed by Paranoid (1970), and Master of Reality (1971), defined heavy metal and set a standard for generations of musicians.
Osbourne’s powerful, eerie vocals became a signature element of Black Sabbath’s sound, and his theatrical performances captivated audiences worldwide. During the band’s early years, however, Ozzy developed a notorious reputation for alcohol and drug abuse, which led to tensions within the band. In 1979, these issues culminated in Ozzy’s departure from Black Sabbath.
