The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 1933, the Eagles are a member of the National Football League (NFL) and play in the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. Known for their passionate fan base, iconic green and white colors, and a storied history that includes several ups and downs, the Eagles have become one of the most recognized franchises in professional sports.
The Eagles were formed in 1933 as a replacement for the defunct Frankford Yellow Jackets. The team’s name was inspired by the “Eagle” emblem of the New Deal’s National Recovery Administration. The Eagles played their first season in 1933, finishing with a record of 3-5-1 under head coach Bert Bell. The team struggled in its early years, often competing with local rivals such as the New York Giants and Washington Redskins.
In the 1940s, the Eagles experienced a period of success, highlighted by their first NFL Championship win in 1948. Under head coach Greasy Neale, the Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals 7-0 in a hard-fought game. They followed this triumph with a second championship in 1949, overcoming the Los Angeles Rams 14-0. The Eagles’ success during this decade helped solidify their place in the league and garnered a dedicated fan base.
