The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional ice hockey team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1967 as one of the first expansion teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Flyers quickly became a key player in the league and are known for their passionate fan base, distinctive orange and black team colors, and a reputation for toughness on the ice.
The Flyers were established during the NHL’s expansion from six to twelve teams. Their first general manager, Bud Poile, and their first head coach, Keith Allen, were tasked with building a competitive roster. The team’s name, “Flyers,” was chosen from a name-the-team contest and reflects Philadelphia’s historical connection to aviation, with the city being home to many aviation pioneers and companies.
The Flyers made an immediate impact in their inaugural season (1967-68), finishing with a respectable record of 37 wins and 31 losses, earning them a playoff berth. The team’s physical play and aggressive style of hockey quickly gained them a reputation as one of the toughest teams in the league.
The 1970s marked a golden era for the Flyers, often referred to as the “Broad Street Bullies” era. The team became famous for its hard-nosed playing style, characterized by physicality and intimidation. Under head coach Fred Shero, the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup in 1974, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games. The victory was significant, as it marked the first time a team from the United States won the Stanley Cup.
