Ray Wersching is a former NFL placekicker best known for his consistent and reliable performance during his 15-year career, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers. Born on August 21, 1950, in Mondsee, Austria, Wersching moved to the United States with his family at the age of 10, eventually settling in Southern California. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college football and developed his skills as a kicker, establishing a reputation for his precision and reliability under pressure.
Wersching entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 1973, beginning his career with the San Diego Chargers. His accuracy and dependability quickly became evident, and he played with the Chargers until 1976. In 1977, Wersching joined the San Francisco 49ers, where he would spend the majority of his career and leave a lasting legacy. Known for his distinct kicking style, where he took only one or two steps before making contact with the ball, Wersching developed a technique that allowed him to consistently convert field goals and extra points, even in high-pressure situations. This unique style contributed to his reputation as one of the most accurate kickers of his time.
Wersching’s tenure with the 49ers coincided with the team’s rise to prominence in the NFL under head coach Bill Walsh. His skills were instrumental in helping the 49ers secure several victories during the 1980s, a period when the team established itself as a powerhouse. Wersching played a pivotal role in the 49ers’ successful Super Bowl runs in the 1981 and 1984 seasons. In Super Bowl XVI against the Cincinnati Bengals, Wersching scored 13 points, including four field goals, setting a Super Bowl record and significantly contributing to the 49ers’ first Super Bowl win. His calm demeanor and consistent performance made him a dependable asset in crucial games, where his field goals often provided the 49ers with the points needed to secure victories.
