Reba Nell McEntire was born on March 28, 1955, in McAlester, Oklahoma, and grew up in nearby Chockie. Raised in a family with a deep-rooted connection to the rodeo, her father, Clark McEntire, was a three-time world champion steer roper, and her mother, Jacqueline, was a teacher who nurtured her children’s love for music. Reba, the third of four siblings, had a strong bond with her family, who helped shape her values and work ethic. Jacqueline had initially dreamed of becoming a country music singer herself and encouraged her children to sing.
Reba and her siblings formed a vocal group called the “Singing McEntires,” performing at local events. While Reba loved singing, she also competed in rodeo events like her father’s, gaining a reputation for her rodeo skills. In 1974, Reba’s musical journey took a significant turn. While still a student at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, she sang the national anthem at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City. Red Steagall, a country singer, noticed her talent and invited her to Nashville to record a demo.
This led to her first contract with Mercury Records in 1975, and by 1976, Reba had released her debut single, “I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand.” Her early years at Mercury, however, were challenging. Though she released several singles and albums, they had modest success, and she felt creatively restricted. Her breakthrough came when she signed with MCA Records in 1983, leading to greater control over her music and the development of her unique sound—a blend of traditional and contemporary country.
