Rihanna grew up in a modest household in Barbados, the daughter of Ronald Fenty, a warehouse supervisor, and Monica Braithwaite, an accountant. At 15, she formed a girl group with two of her classmates, which caught the attention of American music producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing in Barbados. Rogers helped Rihanna record demo tapes, leading to her auditioning for Jay-Z, the president of Def Jam Recordings. Impressed by her talent, he signed her to the label in 2005.
