Robert De Niro was born on August 17, 1943, in New York City, to artists Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral. Growing up in Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood, De Niro was exposed to the arts from a young age. His father was a painter and sculptor, while his mother was a prominent abstract expressionist painter. After his parents divorced when he was two, De Niro lived with his mother, who encouraged his artistic pursuits.
De Niro attended the Stella Adler Conservatory and later transferred to the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where he honed his acting skills. His dedication to the craft was evident early on, as he took on various roles in theater productions while also working as a taxi driver to support himself.
De Niro’s film career began in 1963 with a small role in The Wedding Party. However, it was his collaboration with director Martin Scorsese that propelled him into stardom. His breakout performance came in 1973 with Mean Streets, where he played the role of Johnny Boy, showcasing his intense and gritty acting style. This film marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership with Scorsese, with De Niro becoming a key figure in the New Hollywood movement.
De Niro’s career skyrocketed with his portrayal of Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II (1974). His performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and he became widely recognized for his ability to immerse himself in roles. De Niro’s commitment to authenticity led him to gain weight and learn to speak Italian for the role.
