Samuel L. Jackson is an American actor and producer, renowned for his powerful presence, distinct voice, and illustrious career spanning over five decades. Born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jackson rose from a challenging background to become one of the most iconic and highest-grossing actors in Hollywood.
Samuel Leroy Jackson was raised by his mother, Elizabeth Harriett, and maternal grandparents after his father lived away from the family. Jackson had a somewhat turbulent childhood and initially struggled with a speech impediment. His early education took place at segregated schools in Chattanooga, but he went on to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied marine biology. It was at Morehouse that Jackson first became interested in acting, after joining a local acting group to earn extra credit.
His time at Morehouse coincided with the Civil Rights Movement, and Jackson became politically active, joining protests and taking part in movements advocating for racial justice. This activism even led to his temporary suspension from Morehouse after he participated in a protest that held members of the college’s board of trustees hostage. Eventually, he returned to the school and graduated with a degree in drama in 1972.
