The Seattle Kraken, one of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) newest franchises, represents Seattle’s rich maritime history and passion for sports. Joining the NHL for the 2021–22 season as the league’s 32nd team, the Kraken brought professional hockey back to Seattle after nearly a century. The team’s debut created a ripple of excitement across the Pacific Northwest, with fans embracing the Kraken’s identity, colors, and the spirit of adventure associated with their name.
Seattle’s journey toward acquiring an NHL franchise began in earnest in 2018, spearheaded by Seattle Hockey Partners, a group led by billionaire David Bonderman and sports executive Tod Leiweke. The NHL unanimously approved the expansion bid on December 4, 2018, granting Seattle its first top-level hockey team since the Seattle Metropolitans. The Metropolitans, the first American team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917, laid the foundation for hockey in Seattle but disbanded in 1924. With a rich but largely forgotten hockey history, Seattle was eager to reignite its connection with the sport.
The team’s name, “Kraken,” was unveiled on July 23, 2020, after an extensive fan consultation and branding process. The Kraken, a mythical sea creature from Scandinavian folklore, evokes the mystery and power of the deep sea, a fitting symbol for a city with strong maritime roots. The branding is sleek and modern, featuring a “S” logo inspired by Seattle’s maritime legacy, with a hidden tentacle and red eye symbolizing the Kraken. The team colors – “Deep Sea Blue,” “Ice Blue,” and “Boundless Blue” – reflect the ocean and icy landscapes, resonating with Seattle’s natural environment. Fans quickly rallied behind the “Release the Kraken” mantra, adding a unique and captivating character to Seattle’s sports culture.
