The Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise based in Seattle, Washington, were established in 1977 as an expansion team. The team’s name reflects the maritime heritage of Seattle, a city known for its deep connections to the Pacific Ocean, fishing, and trade. The Mariners are a member of the American League (AL) West division and have gained a reputation as a competitive team, despite a history marked by both highs and lows.
The Mariners were founded as part of MLB’s expansion efforts in the late 1970s, with the team playing its first game on April 6, 1977, against the California Angels. The team initially struggled, finishing their inaugural season with a dismal record of 64-98. Early on, they faced challenges in attracting fans and establishing a strong identity, competing with the well-established NFL franchise, the Seattle Seahawks, and the NBA team, the Seattle SuperSonics.
During their first few years, the Mariners were characterized by their roster of young and unproven players. However, they also showcased talent such as outfielder Dave Henderson and pitcher Gaylord Perry. In the early 1980s, the Mariners began to find their footing with the acquisition of players like future Hall of Famer, second baseman, and slugger, Julio Cruz.
