The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington. They are a member of the National Football League (NFL) and compete in the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. Known for their passionate fan base and distinctive team colors of navy blue, green, and silver, the Seahawks have a rich history marked by both challenges and triumphs.
Founded in 1976, the Seattle Seahawks began play in the NFL as an expansion team, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team’s first head coach was Jack Patera, and they played their inaugural season at the Kingdome in Seattle. The Seahawks struggled in their early years, finishing their first season with a record of 2–12. However, the team showed promise, improving to a 9–7 record in 1978.
One of the most significant moments in the early history of the Seahawks was their first playoff appearance in the 1983 season. Led by quarterback Dave Krieg and running back Curt Warner, the Seahawks finished the regular season with a 9–7 record and made a memorable run in the playoffs, defeating the Denver Broncos in the AFC Wild Card game before losing to the Los Angeles Raiders in the AFC Championship Game.
The 1980s and 1990s were pivotal decades for the Seahawks. After reaching the playoffs in 1983, the team made several playoff appearances throughout the decade. The 1984 season marked a high point, as the Seahawks finished with a franchise-best 12–4 record and advanced to Super Bowl XVIII, where they faced the Washington Redskins. Unfortunately, they lost 38–9, but the experience laid the groundwork for future success.
