Sid Bream is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player, known for his time as a first baseman and his iconic role in one of the most dramatic moments in baseball history. Born on August 3, 1960, in Toccoa, Georgia, Bream’s career spanned from 1983 to 1994, during which he became a beloved figure in both the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations.
Bream attended Liberty University, where he honed his skills as a baseball player before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 18th round of the 1981 MLB Draft. He quickly made a name for himself in the minor leagues and made his MLB debut for the Pirates in 1983. Over the next several seasons, Bream became known for his solid hitting, clutch performances, and leadership qualities. Although he was never considered a star player, his consistent contributions to his teams made him a valuable asset.
One of the defining moments of Bream’s career came in 1992 during the National League Championship Series (NLCS) between the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bream, who had been traded to the Braves earlier that year, became a part of one of the most memorable plays in postseason history. In Game 7 of the NLCS, with the Braves trailing by a run and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Bream was on first base when Francisco Cabrera hit a single to left field.
Bream, known for his lack of speed, made a dramatic and unlikely dash for home plate. Despite a perfect throw from Pirates outfielder Barry Bonds, Bream slid into home just ahead of the tag, scoring the winning run and sending the Braves to the World Series. This moment, often referred to as “The Slide,” is considered one of the most iconic plays in MLB history.
